Goathouse
Derbyshire
The new build family home is located on a sloping site near the town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire. It is organised around, and opens up to embrace, a south-east facing courtyard which is protected by the L-shaped mass from the busy roadway to the north. The proposed volume is sited so that the views to the south are maximised, keeping it in context with its surroundings whilst its massing and disposition is intended to moderate the visibility of the house when seen from the perimeter.
To the roadside, it presents itself as a short run of a two-storey accommodation. The layout divides the accommodation into two blocks in plan with the primary circulation set on the west-east axis. The smaller block contains a portico entrance, kitchen and stair core on the ground floor with two bedrooms with gallery on the first floor. The gallery overlooks the double height living and dining spaces and it extends out to the views beyond. As light travels during the day, penetrating the clerestory windows located at high level on the south-west and north-west elevations, shadows inside will shape an ever-changing atmosphere.
